Press Release: Spartan Scientific Introduces Industry Breakthrough Stepper Valve

Youngstown, OH — Spartan Scientific, manufacturer of high-quality fluid & pneumatic automation components, releases its STEP 12, a self-contained media separated electronic proportional flow control valve. The STEP 12 brings an entirely new perspective to controlling liquids and gasses. With more than 1,500 different positions (or steps), it precisely regulates flow output and requires minimal power to maintain a desired position, maximizing energy savings.

The STEP 12 is self-contained with control circuitry (including an innovative M12 connector) for both the motor and valve embedded into the unit. This eliminates needing to purchase a separate control device, which can compromise performance. In addition, control can be tailored to increase resolution, enhancing reliable and repeatable flows. Additionally, the valve is designed for full flow under maximum pressure conditions with a 1/2” NPT version capable of accommodating 30 GPM of water with a maximum pressure of 150 psi.

“The STEP 12 is a gamechanger,” said Todd Harmon, vice president of Canfield Industries. “While achieving proportional control in previous electrically actuated valves with closed loop systems meant spending thousands of dollars for parts from multiple suppliers, the STEP 12’s flow rates can be controlled as an all-in-one, plug-n-play, ready to go device. The ability to move in so many small steps allows an unprecedented level of reliability and repeatability. With easy installation and energy savings, it’s truly an industry breakthrough.”

Furthermore, a handy multicolor on-board LED (RGB) ring indicator displays the status of the device for fast troubleshooting. Finally, a separating diaphragm designed with a specialized convolution and elliptical flow tip produces a linear flow versus valve stroke position, maintaining dry mechanical movement for long life and high flow.

“Applications for the STEP 12 are limited only by your imagination,” said Phil Muntean, chief engineer for Spartan. “Aside from general manufacturing, the STEP 12 can be used in medical, food and drug, drinking water, automotive, truck and bus, agriculture and fluid temperature control—to name a few.”

The Stepper 12 valve can be purchased by contacting an Authorized Distributor or by contacting Spartan Scientific directly for custom orders.

Spartan Scientific's Isolation Valves and the Role they Play in the Medical Industry

As a manufacturer of fluid control products used for medical and analytical processing, Spartan Scientific faces an overabundance of evolving and complex requirements, standards, and regulations along with fierce competition always looking for an edge and the ability to stay ahead.

Over the years, the medical and analytical markets have regularly undergone positive developments and technological advancements. These devices and processes are often made up of numerous components from various manufacturers throughout the world and have a direct relationship with the advancement of the medical and analytical industries.

Fluid power and the ability to control a media, such as a gas or liquid, has remained a fundamental principle of medical and analytical technology. More specifically, isolation valves also known as media separated valves are frequently used in today’s medical industry and are found in many different processes and devices, mostly because of their simple functionality, cost effectiveness, reliability, and repeatability.

To understand the vital role that isolation valves play within medical markets, it’s important to understand the idea behind isolation valves and to recognize that “one size fits all” does not apply. An isolation valve is used to control the flow of a media, while ensuring the media remains isolated or separated from any contaminants or hazardous materials that could potentially cause a device failure, or even worse, put something or someone in danger. Examples of common medical medias include blood, plasma, dialysate fluid, steam, disinfectant fluid, CO2, oxygen, and water. Different media types can, and usually do, belong to different applications, which in turn requires additional variables to be considered such as valve functionality, physical size requirements, actuation or response times, seal or diaphragm materials, dead volume, and/or life span. Some examples of devices and applications that may use isolation valves include dialysis equipment, clinical sterilizers, respirators, ventilators, diagnostic equipment, and medical sanitation.

In order to stay ahead in this evolving market and because of the diverse range of isolation valve applications, manufacturers have combined their capabilities and resources to provide engineered custom solutions specifically focused on meeting critical requirements, exceeding expectations, and creating value for medical providers, practitioners, and patients.

There are many challenges that manufacturers face when designing a custom solution and it’s important that both the customer and the manufacturer have an open line of communication, with complete transparency, throughout the design and development process. Communication, or lack thereof, can dramatically drive up material, labor, and engineering costs, extend a projects timeline or release schedule, and most notably, can cause an increased probability of failure.

According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, “each year, the FDA receives several hundred thousand medical device reports of suspected device-associated deaths, serious injuries, and malfunctions.” Malfunctions can come from a number of different variables, and don’t necessarily derive from a fluid power component or an isolation valve. However, the FDA and other governing bodies that control the medical market, focus on and pay close attention to malfunctions, failures, and other types of issues.

After reading this quote from FDA.gov, Phil Muntean, chief engineer of Spartan Scientific, explained that “Any device or any media within a valve that can potentially come in contact with the human body necessitates additional approvals or adheres to additional standards. When discussing a new project where we’ll be engineering a custom solution, we keep in close contact with our customers and end users in order to execute any additional testing that may be involved either by our manufacturing facility or by an outside source.” Other ways to ensure an engineered solution has followed the correct testing procedures using the most up-to-date testing parameters is to gather information through market research, competitive research, or related predecessor solutions.

According to the Department of Commerce, “the United States represented about 40% of the global medical device market in 2017 and the medical industry is responsible for approximately 2 million jobs located in the U.S.” The future for manufacturers looks light a bright one, but creating value is mandatory for companies in this competitive market. To survive, manufacturers and companies alike will need to overcome future challenges pertaining to the issues like the emergence of IoT Technology, more innovative product design and product quality, regulatory compliance, and approvals.

CRDV, CRDV/S, and CRDV/S with WiFi - Then & Now - Published by Fluid Power Journal

SPARTAN SCIENTIFIC, an American manufacturing facility located in Northeast Ohio, specializes and builds fluid control products within the automation industry. Spartan has learned through their many years of experience that, not only the automation industry, but all industries are constantly evolving. New ideas accompanied by new innovations and technologies are regularly assimilating into different types of businesses and manufacturers as efficiency, productivity, performance, and cost savings continue to stay at the forefront of nearly every industry.

Industrial Air Compressors are used every day within an incredibly diverse range of industries. Industries that are all striving to be more efficient, proficient, and economical. Today, we see that industrial air compressors are core components of engineering, manufacturing, construction, agriculture, mechanical work, factory assembly lines, transportation, and many more. A common occurrence with all air compressors is the natural accumulation of moisture and water. In fact, moisture accumulation attributes to the majority of all problems and maintenance issues within any industry. Those who have experience in engineering and construction are especially aware of this, as these machines are responsible for a great deal of the power used in these industries.

One of Spartan Scientific’s first products developed was the Series CRDV, also known as the “Condensation Removal Drain Valve.” When Spartan Scientific came into existence back in 1987, they were fully aware of this age-old problem and understood what kind of consequences would transpire if the natural buildup of water or moisture began to overtake an air compressor and its air lines by not being drained frequently or correctly. The Series CRDV Condensation Removal Drain Valve dramatically increases the life of air compressor systems, which leads to increased efficiency, productivity, and cost savings. The idea behind the Series CRDV makes it so that the water accumulation can be drained and removed at any point within an air system, using a solid-state timer and a proven solenoid valve operator.

As technology has evolved, Spartan Scientific continued to make positive changes to keep up with their customers’ changing requirements. The Series CRDV has proven to be a great product, but there were ways to increase efficiency even more. The Series CRDV will drain water build-up after a set amount of time, which means that certain conditions, such as low humidity, would generate much less water than normal to high humidity. This would cause the Series CRDV to open up and purge the compressor regardless of the amount of water present in the air compressor. Purging and opening without water would lead to air loss within the compressor system. And overtime, air loss will add up and lead to a loss of substantial amounts of money.

To combat this problem, Spartan Scientific developed the Series CRDV/S in 2008. This enhanced drain valve took the same underlining principle of draining water build up, but made it so that a compressor system could not undergo virtually any air loss. The key component within the Series CRDV/S is its self-learning mode that will open the valve to drain moisture more often or less often based on the sensing of the water and demand thereof. Other features of the CRDV/S include a 24-hour self-cleaning cycle, status indicator lights for easy maintenance, and an environment-resistant design.

In 2019, Spartan Scientific will be releasing an enhanced and more evolved version of their Series CRDV/S. This version is a WiFi-enabled drain valve that uses IoT (Internet of Things) technology. When asking Spartan Scientific’s Chief Engineer Phil Muntean why IoT technology would be an important feature to potential consumers, he explained: “It’s the freedom. There are no boundaries and you don’t have to be restricted to your facility to monitor any of your equipment. You can be at home sitting in your living room watching television and view real-time data that tracks any type of unusual behavior or inconsistencies that your systems might be experiencing. Imagine receiving an email or text message alert, sent directly to your phone, that notifies you that your system is acting erratic or that it may need your attention soon. The IoT CRDV/S drain valve will be able to prevent problems before ever happening.”

The idea of IoT technology might be new to some, but manufacturers, businesses, and organizations alike are using IoT technology in a diverse variety of industries to operate more efficiently with higher cost savings and to better understand their customers, which in turn will enhance customer service, improve all decision-making, and increase the value of their business.

New Product: Series 4290

Spartan Scientific’s Stackable Solenoid Valve Cuts Manifold Inventory and Machining Costs

Spartan Scientific is offering the game-changing Series 4290 Direct Acting Stackable Solenoid Valve that eliminates the need to machine and inventory multiple manifolds.

The Series 4290, used in water-related applications, improves on Spartan’s 3000 solenoid valve series with a larger body made of polyvinyl chloride material that is available in single units or stacks. The larger PVC body provides increased flow and higher pressure ratings than the Series 3900 and has a higher resistance to chemicals in various applications.

Instead of having to machine and inventory multiple-sized manifolds, companies now have the flexibility of buying the Series 4290 in single units and building whatever size manifold they need.

“Each individual valve on the manifold is interchangeable so it gives you the cost savings of not having a lot of inventory of various sized manifolds,” said Todd Harmon, Spartan Scientific vice president. It also saves money for product distributors, allowing them to stock one valve unit and sell multiple configurations of that product.

The valve also has a manual override. If there’s no power to the valve, the problem can be fixed by inserting a screwdriver into a slot to open the valve.

Series 4290 is best suited for the agriculture industry, marijuana growing, fertilizer production, water processing equipment and compressed air service. The valve is used for electrical control of air, caustics, inert gases, oil and water.

Other highlights:
*Glass-filled nylon encapsulated coil, stainless steel plunger and stop and spring compensated plunger seals for long trouble-free service.
*Orifice sizes from 0.8 mm to 3.0 mm.
*EPDM, FKM and NBR standard seat materials.
